How children learn

Styles of learning

At Jack & Jill’s we believe children learn best through a balance of play, exploration, and supportive guidance. Our approach combines child-led discovery with carefully planned activities that help children develop confidence, curiosity, and key early learning skills. By blending different teaching styles, we create a nurturing environment where every child can learn in a way that feels natural and enjoyable.

Free play

At the heart of our approach is child-led exploration. Teachers step back to observe, allowing children the freedom to immerse themselves in carefully crafted spaces such as reading corners, mud kitchens, arts and crafts, and music, where they can develop creativity, independence and a genuine love of learning.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What do children learn in nursery?

At Jack & Jill’s in Amersham, children learn through play that’s designed to spark curiosity and build early skills. Counting, storytelling, music, art and outdoor exploration develop language, numeracy, creativity and social confidence. Guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage, our team follows each child’s unique interests so learning feels exciting and personal every day.

What should my child bring to nursery?

Please send your child with a clearly named bag containing a full change of clothes and weather-appropriate outerwear, such as a waterproof coat and sturdy shoes or wellies. In colder months, add a warm hat and gloves to keep them comfortable during outdoor play.

How do I know all of your nursery staff are properly trained?

All of our staff hold the required Early Years qualifications and keep their first aid and safeguarding training fully up to date. We carry out enhanced DBS checks for every team member and refresh background checks regularly.

In addition, staff attend ongoing professional development sessions so their knowledge of early childhood care and education stays current and thorough.

What happens if my child is unwell during nursery?

If your child becomes unwell during their time at nursery, our staff will assess their symptoms and provide a comfortable space for them to rest. We will contact you immediately so that you can collect your child and make sure they receive any necessary care. Our team follows strict health and safety guidelines to protect all children and prevent the spread of illness.

Is nursery full-time education?

Nursery at Jack & Jill’s Amersham is flexible and can be full-time or part-time, depending on your child’s needs and your family’s schedule. We offer a variety of sessions designed to support early learning while fitting around home routines.

Whether attending full days or shorter sessions, every child benefits from a structured programme that promotes development across all areas of learning.

Does early nursery education have an impact on later life?

Yes, early nursery education lays the foundation for lifelong learning and personal development. By developing social skills, language and problem-solving from a young age, children gain confidence that benefits them at school and beyond.

Early experiences with structured play, routines and positive relationships can have a lasting impact on academic success and teamwork skills.
